It's was March 2016.

 

One of those seasons where I thought I understood my body.   I felt fit.  

I was packing for a trip to Italy and pulling on a pair of jeans that used to be too small.  Except now... they were over a fist size too big. Too big in the waistband, too big in the hips - the kind of "too big" that should feel triumphant.  

I laughed at myself - that surprised, incredulous kind of laugh you make when your brain hasn't fully registered what just happened.   But underneath the laugh was something else.  Because by then travel had become a trigger - my body reacted to flights, airports, time zones in ways no one could explain.   I thought it kept happening because my workouts were not as intense and I was eating foods that I normally didn't.  

So I tossed the "fat pants" into my suitcase anyway.  Not out of excitement, but out of precaution.

 

They wouldn't hit my skin
again for 72 hours.

 

The first outfit I put on for the trip was my sporty lulu wide leg "studio pants" - comfy, baggy travel pants - the ones that always fit.  The only pants I could trust.   I wore those pants through the airport.  Onto the plane.  Across the ocean.  Into the layover in Amsterdam. 

And somewhere between Minneapolis and the Netherlands.... my body changed.    I packed my own plane food. I was fully hydrated the entire flight.  I didn't touch anything "off limits". 

By the time I reached Amsterdam, I knew I was in trouble.  My body was swelling beneath the fabric.  My legs felt like they were filling with hot sand.  My hips were tight. My belly looked pregnant.  My face was swollen.  My skin felt foreign.  Little did I know, that within another 24 hours, when I tried to run - the thing that brought so much joy exploring cities overseas - it felt like shards of glass were piercing my legs from the inside.  

And then the moment that broke me:

 

The jeans that were too big three days ago, wouldn't pass my thighs.

There I was staring at my own body in disbelief, feeling like I'd been dropped back
into my 17-year old self...

 

... except I was in my 30s, over a decade of obsessed gym rat, marathons, kettlebell, hot yoga, and spin behind me.  A lifetime athlete and someone who ate clean, moved daily, tracked water, minerals, and minutes of movement in a spreadsheet per week. I studied nutrition, sport performance, and  every new food strategy (diet). I didn't buy anything without stalking the food labels in a grocery store, wouldn't touch fast food, and  believed dessert wasn't worth it because "feeling fit" tasted better than sugar.
 

13 years after I had gone from "high school fat girl who hated running more than anything" to D3 college coach recruiting me to run Cross Country, and I still had no explanation for the violent shamed-filled inflammation and fat gain taking over my body every 3-6 months.  It literally felt like the disciplined athlete mindset, identity, and behaviors of consistency I had faithfully executed  hadn't reached the mirror or my cells.  It didn't matter what fitness type or food strategy...  the weight always came back on.

Why I Created
The Lean Body Experience

 

I didn’t create this because of diet culture.

              
I created it because of what diet culture did to me.

And because of what I watched it do to millions of women who were never given the one thing their bodies required more than discipline, more than willpower, more than macros:

Safety.

Lean Body Safety is the opposite of weight loss culture.

It is what every woman should have had from the beginning:

A regulated nervous system

A strong, responsive body

A clear brain

A safe relationship with food

A path back to herself

 

This is the upper room.

The breath returns.

Identity resurrects.

Regulation replaces punishment.

Strength replaces fear.

 

The Short Story

I made a promise to God.

Not from naïveté.
From survival.

My relationship with Him wasn’t pretty in my teens and twenties.


I didn’t believe until He met me in a car on Interstate 94, driving toward the University of Minnesota — while my body collapsed under the weight of chronic restriction, survival physiology, and a nervous system no one knew how to read.

Everything I know now — everything I teach — should have been caught in a basic lifetime health class.


What I was living was textbook cellular danger response on + malnourished dorsal and sympathetic physiology.


But no one was trained to see it.

And that sentence right there is why I built an entire system.

Because when safety is missing from an entire culture, women collapse into survival, call it “discipline,” and lose themselves in the process.

 

We are not here to collapse back into survival.

 

We are here to build nervous system sophistication.


We are here to restore metabolic safety.


We are here to return to ventral vagal strength.


We are here to re-root the middle class in embodied resilience, not fear.

If we don’t, the divide widens.
Physically. Financially. Spiritually.

I gained 30 pounds in 48 hours in Italy following a ketogenic diet.
I ran marathons while malnourished.
I lost my childhood memories by 2018.
